Community mural artist
Tia Richardson, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is a community mural artist who has completed more than 50 projects collaborating with non-profits, businesses, schools, grassroots organizations, and local government. Using art to relieve emotional stress from trauma, her process offers people from all walks of life a chance to acknowledge challenges within their community and imagine ways it can be made better. In 2017, the City of Milwaukee and Safe & Sound, Inc. partnered with Richardson to create a mural in a community that had experienced tragedy and unrest the year prior. The project was documented in a short video called Sherman Park Rising. In 2018, she was awarded Artist of the Year by the Milwaukee Arts Board. Another video documents her struggle to heal herself and a community through a collaborative mural called Rockford Taking. Flight. The images in Richardson’s murals shine like beacons of light, as lasting symbols reminding us of our common good.
