Robert Martin

2026 Tanne Award Recipient
Alma, Wisconsin
Transdisciplinary Artist

Robert Martin, Alma, Wisconsin, is a transdisciplinary artist working in painting, drawing, and sculpture/installation. Their work explores American rural life and aesthetics through a queer lens. Martin’s carefully rendered figurative paintings glow with idyllic nostalgia while simultaneously envisioning hope for what is to come. As Martin states, artmaking allows them to “imagine queer futures while honoring a rooted past by permitting these stories to exist within one plane.”

Martin earned their BFA from the University of Wisconsin-Stout and their MFA from the University of Colorado-Boulder. Their work has been widely exhibited throughout the U.S. and featured in New American Paintings magazine and received the New American Paintings Emerging Artist Award in 2021. In 2022, they received the Oscar Williams and Gene Durwood Award. Martin’s work is represented by EDJI Gallery in Brussels.
