Matthew Kargol, Oskaloosa, Iowa, is an artist working across multiple media, focusing primarily on sculpture. His work is influenced by his rural Midwestern upbringing and living in a world of dualities and contradictions. Just as there is a struggle in life, his works express struggle through juxtapositions of natural and manufactured materials and contrasting forms. By exploring such differences, Kargol is interested in creating work that “vibrates within the audience’s soul, thus creating a visual language that becomes universal.”
As an educator and curator, Kargol creates opportunities for others to experience community and belonging through art. He exhibits in gallery settings and has won numerous commissions for large public sculptures which can be seen throughout the Midwest and in Colorado and the Carolinas. He holds B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Northern Iowa and an M.F.A. from Clemson University.
