Transmedia performance artist/educator/crip witch
Mary Grace Bernard (she/her), Denver, CO and New Orleans, LA, is a transmedia and performance artist, educator, advocate, and crip witch. With staged photography to found-object sculpture, digital video to curation, performance to art writing, she examines a myriad of ideas through the lenses of queerness and dis/ability studies. In her performances, MG turns viewers into active, empathetic spectators of her painful and time-consuming care routines. MG’s work pulls from various historical contexts to reimagine traditional narratives for a more equitable future. Bernard’s art and writing have been featured in a wide range of publications and exhibition venues. In 2017, MG launched the digital contemporary art platform Femme Salée (F&S) which is dedicated to starting, sharing, and making accessible difficult conversations frequently absent from the art world. F&S produces both print and online journals that promote unique perspectives from excluded and marginalized individuals. In the year since receiving the Tanne Award, Bernard moved into a larder studio and continued to exhibit her work in numerous shows and lecture at a number of venues.
