Juandalynn Abernathy
Atlanta, Georgia
Classical Singer
Juandalynn Abernathy was born in Montgomery, Alabama. The daughter of Ralph Abernathy, a co-founder of the American Civil Rights Movement, as a child she experienced the bombing of her home. She found solace from her fear through her love for gospel singing. She began performing as a soloist with classic religious songs in various churches and received encouragement from Mahlia Jackson. She attended Oberlin College and went on to receive her Master’s Degree from Boston Conservatory of Music, where she was a finalist for the Metropolitan Opera. A scholarship from the Goethe Institute in Munich sent her to Europe for further intense studies. She became an extremely accomplished soprano. Her repertoire includes a wide range of classical music with a specialty and passion for African American music. This gives a great meaning to her life which she wants to share with others. She has founded a gospel choir and vocal ensemble. She provides students of all ages with classical vocal training adaptable to styles like pop, rock, gospel and classical. With her exceedingly versatile repertoire, she has performed recitals nationally and has given several concerts for various American Embassies in Europe. Besides her UnitedStates performances, Abernathy has sung at major music festivals in Europe and given recitals throughout Europe, especially in Germany, as well as in Japan and South America. She was honored to perform her ‘Celebration of Song Concert" at the Martin Lither King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change and she was invited to sing at the funeral of Coretta Scott King.
