Composer/Writer
Jennie Gottschalk is a composer and writer based in Boston. She is interested in using the parameters of sound and composition to rethink and reframe everyday life. For the past 20 years she has been exploring practices of "nonfictional music" through research and writing along with her compositional work. Writing projects include her dissertation, Perception and Actuality: an application of William James’s experiential approach to the music of Alvin Lucier and Michael Pisaro (2008), as well as Experimental Music Since 1970 (Bloomsbury, 2016) and Being Time: Case Studies in Musical Temporality (co-author, Bloomsbury, 2019). Her current project is an invitation to a reader to explore their own immediate concerns through a series of prompts and scores. She holds a bachelor’s degree in composition from The Boston Conservatory (2001), and a master’s degree and doctorate from Northwestern University (2008). website:
