Janinah Burnett

2021 Tanne Award Recipient
Fairburn, Georgia
Singer/Actor/Writer

Visionary performance artist Janinah Burnett is a versatile singing actor, musician, writer, arranger, and educator. Daughter of artist parents, Burnett received a BA degree from Spelman College and received a Master’s of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music. Burnett has thrilled audiences on the stages of Broadway and the Metropolitan Opera as well as onstage in numerous cities around the world including Rome, Paris, Oslo, Moscow, Tokyo, Berlin, and Madrid to name a few. A recipient of the Los Angeles Theater Alliance’s Ovation Award, Burnett’s artistry explores the unification of musical genres which are normally found separately in her vocal performance practice. Her debut recording project entitled Love The Color of Your Butterfly is a musical mosaic which encourages loving all the parts of who we are. It also presents her concept of “Clazz” and has been featured in numerous publications including the Financial Times, Playbill, Broadway World, Downbeat Magazine and Opera News. “Clazz” seeks to encourage collaboration and redefine the parameters of genre while embracing the parts of history that are unknown or forgotten. Burnett’s mission is to discover innovative ways to be of service to the world community with nuanced storytelling while shedding light on the delicious, hidden and forgotten history of her ancestors.
