Basement-Based Artist
Ella Weber, Omaha, Nebraska, is a basement-based artist and author who uses humor, performance, and storytelling within her multifaceted practice. Playfully upending the existential fabrics of daily life, Weber transforms her minimum-wage day jobs into her studio. As she worked the deli counter, Weber blurred the line between employee and customer; performance and reality; fact and fiction; and art and life. Trained in printmaking, Weber received an MFA from the University of Kansas. Her debut novel, The Deli Diaries, was published by Latah Books.
Weber describes her art as an attempt to reconcile the disconnect between the spiritual and physical, saying “It’s no mistake that my earliest childhood painting depicts a self-portrait as a sad clown. Thirty years later, I still fluctuate between comedy and tragedy.”
