Daniel Richardson

2019 Tanne Award Recipient
Altadena, CA
Composer/musician

Daniel Richardson is a composer/musician. He began playing the saxophone while in elementary school and then went on to attend the renowned Berklee College of Music. He toured with the Grammy winning artist Solange Knowles in venues such as the Sydney Opera House, Hollywood Bowl and the F.Y.F festival. Daniel has been extremely active in education and music mentoring and is currently serving as the instrumental ensemble director at the Barnhart School in Arcadia CA. He has won numerous awards for music excellence : Down Beat Magazine’s award for the best arrangement for a big band in the U.S. and Canada, ACT-SO National Competition silver medal for original composition for an ensemble, and the Kjazz radio 88.1 FM award for best instrumentalist. He strives to create a sound unique to himself and to evoke the feelings and experiences of life that have shaped the artist he is. In 2019-2020 he reached new depths in understanding the intersectionality of seemingly disparate music through mentorships as well as collaborations with respected artists from Los Angeles and across the country. Most recently Daniel started an initiative to provide food and water to protesters fighting on the front lines for equality. During this time he’s formed relationships with a wide range of people and began composing a suite based on the life experiences of these uniquely different individuals of distinct backgrounds while simultaneously locating and weaving the singularity that connects each of them to one another. This new work is a humanistic extension of his current musical explorations between the intersectionality of varying musical art forms.
