Bart Uchida
Melvin Village, New Hampshire
Sculptor/installation artist
Bart Uchida, a third-generation Japanese Canadian sculptor and installation artist, studied and worked in Carrara, Italy and Ottawa, Canada. Currently based in Melvin Village, New Hampshire and Córdoba, Argentina, his work has evolved from carving wood and stone to include mixed media work, large-scale installations, performance art, and public and community artworks. Underscoring the thematic context of his work, the interface between the human and natural landscapes expresses a concern for the selfishness of human behavior endangering the precarious balance between society and the natural world. Through use of biomorphic shapes and surreal landscapes, the inherent nature of natural materials is revealed even as they are transmogrified into forms that touch on the absurd. He does take heart however, that with an enlightened spirit and positive human action, the impossible can be achieved. He has received a Boston Landscape Architectural Society Merit Award, Massachusetts Urban Horticultural Society Urban Landscape Premiere Award for collaborative work with Johansson and Walcavage Landscape Architects for children’s playgrounds in Franklin Park in Boston, MA and Ecological Design Award for design and built environment, Dorchester Community Center, Dorchester, MA. He has participated in numerous international sculpture symposiums and exhibited in North and South America, Europe, and Asia.
