Charles Coe

2025 Tanne Award Recipient
Cambridge, Massachusetts
Poet / Prose Writer

Charles Coe, Cambridge, Massachusetts, is the author of five books of poetry and one novel. He views and writes about the world through the lens of his experience as an African-American artist and citizen, using that experience as a springboard to examine the universal thoughts and feelings that connect us all as human beings. As a writing teacher who works with elementary through graduate school students, his goal is to share the belief that ultimately the job of every artist is to help create a better world.

Charles is an adjunct professor of English at Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island, where he teaches in the Master of Fine Arts writing program. He is on the Steering Committee of the Boston Chapter of the National Writers Union, an organization that advocates for freelance writers and editors. He also serves on the Boards of Convergence Ensemble, a community-based chamber music organization; the New England Poetry Club; and the Brattleboro Literary Festival.
